2003 Cricket World Cup: Ponting leads Australia to a third title

Champions: Australia · Hosts: South Africa, Zimbabwe & Kenya

Australia retain the trophy

The World Cup came to Africa, with South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya hosting. Australia finished as champions again, defeating India by 125 runs in the Johannesburg final on 23 March. Their third title followed victories in 1987 and 1999.

The innings that decided the final

Ricky Ponting finished unbeaten on 140 and Damien Martyn made 88 not out. Their unbroken third-wicket partnership of 234 lifted Australia to 359 for two. India were dismissed for 234, despite Virender Sehwag’s 82.

Kenya reach the last four

Kenya’s run to the semi-finals gave the tournament another defining story. They reached the Super Six stage and then the last four, where India ended their campaign. Australia overcame Sri Lanka in the other semi-final before producing their decisive batting performance in the final.
