Co-hosts meet in the final
Australia and New Zealand shared the tournament and then met at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 29 March. Australia won by seven wickets to claim their fifth men’s World Cup title.
Bowlers establish control
New Zealand were dismissed for 183. Grant Elliott made 83, but James Faulkner took three wickets for 36 and Mitchell Johnson three for 30. Australia’s attack left their batters chasing 184 rather than a demanding final-day total.
Clarke and Smith finish the job
Michael Clarke made 74 and Steve Smith finished unbeaten on 56 as Australia reached 186 for three in 33.1 overs. The chase completed a commanding final performance. Faulkner received the Player of the Match award for his role in breaking New Zealand’s innings.
