A first title for England
England became men’s World Cup champions for the first time at Lord’s on 14 July. The final against New Zealand ended level after both the scheduled innings and the Super Over. The boundary-count rule then in force awarded England the title.
Two ties, one champion
New Zealand made 241 for eight and England were all out for 241. Each side then scored 15 in the Super Over. The match therefore belongs in the record book as a tie, with England taking the championship through the tournament’s tie-breaking rule; it was not a victory by runs or wickets.
A finish that kept turning
The closing over included the deflection from Ben Stokes’ bat that ran to the boundary. New Zealand still took the game into a Super Over, and the trophy remained undecided until the final delivery. The outcome gave England their first title and left New Zealand runners-up for a second successive edition.
